I have the GolfShot application installed on my Android phone. I've tried a few times to use it and found it so clumsy that it affected the speed of my play, so in the interest of not holding up my friends I stopped messing with it. I often play with a guy who has the same application on his iPhone - he seems to have an easier time with it (I've heard there are some differences in the application depending on the phone OS), but every time he wants to see his yardage or other data he has to physically fool with his phone for a moment, and make sure it's not in direct sunlight. Amazon ran a sale on the Golf Buddy Tour GPS last week, so I picked one up. Yesterday I went out for a round and took it along, without having read the instructions on how to use it. I turned it on while waiting to tee off the 1st hole at a rather obscure course; it took a few minutes for the unit to acquire satellites and figure out what course it was on, but it got all that sorted out before it was my turn in the box. For eighteen holes I kept the unit in a cup holder on the golf cart, and any time I needed a range to the green I just grabbed it, looked and there it was! By the end of the round my buddy with the iPhone app had stopped looking at his phone and would defer to me for distance. The Golf Buddy display was always on, easily readable in direct sunlight and it always knew what hole we were playing without any input from me. I know it will do more than just give distance to the green, and for these features I'll read the directions and get more familiar with it. In the meantime, I was seriously impressed with how simple and useful this little guy was during my game. One last note: I checked it at a half-dozen course yardage markers for accuracy and it was always dead-on or one or two yards off. My buddy with the iPhone app was off as much as five yards when checking at the same markers. Not a huge variance, but the Golf Buddy was notably more accurate.
